Records of the Wilmette Sailing Association, ca. 1961-2003. The Wilmette Sailing Association, begun at Langdon Beach in 1962 under the leadership of Charles Rauhauser, introduced organized off-the-beach sailing to Wilmette. Sailfish and Sunfish boats were particularly popular with members. The WSA sponsored sailing schools, special events, and an active racing program for almost 20 years. By 1980, however, rising lake levels had made the beach at Langdon unusable, while the opening of the Gillson Park sailing beach fulfilled many of the same needs for which the WSA had been founded. This archive includes membership directories for the WSA from 1970 to 2003, Association news letters and board minutes, documents relating to the leadership of the WSA, and the regulations and rules set forth by the Wilmette Park District in 1962 that allowed for sailing at Wilmette beaches. A subsequent (November 2013) donation of WSA materials from the estate of George Randall added to this archive 20 additional membership directories (the last one from 1998), as well as newsletters for 1982-84 and 1998. Third donation from Anne Mueller in April 2021 added minutes, newsletters, annual reports, and other organizational information to this archival record. These records came from Cissy and Dave Allweiss who asked Anne Mueller to bring the items to the museum. |
