Scope & Content |
Schneider Band sheet music collection, 1909-1924. This sheet music collection belonged to Frank M. Schneider who was the leader of a dance band in addition to the Gross Point Band. This collection is from the dance band. It was donated by his daughter, Marcella Schneider Ortegel Uttenreuther on Jan. 11, 2006. The music dates from 1909 to 1926 with the majority of the music from the teens. The music has no cover art and includes orchestral arrangements for strings, brass, flute, and clarinet. Most of the music seems to have been acquired by mail order from firms such as Leo Feis in New York and several Chicago and Midwestern firms. Most items have penciled notations, including a number - so that each band member could locate the part of a given song - and dates, which may be dates of performance. The original collection consisted of approximately 600 pieces. All but the 80 titles in this archive were donated to the Cunningham Memorial Library of Indiana State University. The collection showcases the kinds of music that formed the repertoire of a working dance band in a rural, German-American Illinois community in the 1910's and 1920's. It reveals a great deal, not just about the musical landscape of Chicago's North Shore in the first quarter of the 20th century, but about the business of music publishing during that period, particularly in the use of local bands to promote the new songs coming out of Tin Pan Alley, as well as, increasingly, Midwestern song publishing centers like Chicago, Kansas City, and St. Louis. |
