Scope & Content |
Wilmette Rotary Club Records, 1924-1980. This collection includes materials related to the club, including minutes, newsletters, histories, and additional materials. The Wilmette Rotary Club holds Charter No. 1656 from the Rotary International. This Charter was granted on May 6, 1924. Twenty-two men had signed the application for the Charter at the organizational meeting held on Feb. 26, 1924 under the sponsorship of the Evanston Rotary Club. Rotary International was founded in 1905 and had many local chapters all over the world. The entire organization is devoted to spreading ethical practices and friendship among business men. The Wilmette Rotary Club holds weekly luncheon meetings; from the founding of the Michigan Shores Club, in 1972, they have been held there. For a time they were held at the Pyranees Restaurant on Skokie Road, but when that restaurant closed, they were moved to Tower Garden Restaurant on Gross Point Road. Members must attend a specified number of meetings a year and can "make-up" a missed meeting by attending a meeting of another Rotary Club. The organization publishes a weekly newsletter, "The Spoke." From 1924 through 1926 the volume numbering of this newsletter ran from May 10 to May 9. After several years of confusion (Vol. 7 runs for 2-1/2 years) the volume year became July 1-June 30 in mid-1930's. This coincides with the term of office which was adopted in 1929. |
