Scope & Content |
Records of the 1995 Wilmette Write-In Election, 1983-1997. This archive contains materials related to the April 4, 1995 local (Village of Wilmette) election for trustees, specifically collected by candidate Sarah "Sally" Oliver. The archive consists of four (4) series: Sarah Oliver's Write-in Campaign, Legal Proceedings, and Opponents' Campaigns. Materials range from printed campaign materials (handbills, letters, etc.), correspondence, polling place materials, newspaper clippings, and legal briefs and documentation. The April 4, 1995 election in Wilmette involved a successful write-in campaign by two candidates for Village Trustee, Sarah Oliver and Dan Carter. These candidates were forced to run a write-in campaign after a legal battle initiated by Ann Wollan and Michael Levitan, who contested the petitions of Oliver and Carter because they did not properly number their petition sheets. These candidates lost the legal battle and were not included on the official ballot, but were both elected. Frank Whitehand, though not a part of the petition problem, became an ally of Oliver and Carter. He was also a winning candidate. |
