Scope & Content |
Luxembourg Brotherhood Records, 1907-1980s. The Collection includes membership reports, minutes, correspondence, and other materials. The Luxembourg Brotherhood, a national organization, was founded as a benefit society to help new immigrants find relatives. The Gross Point Section (Section 21) was formed on May 12, 1907 with 43 charter members. Phillip Doetsch was the group's first president. In 1916, they purchased the Luxembourg Banner. The Brotherhood's aims were primarially social, and they also provided benefits and other support when a member was sick or died. Its parent organization [Chapter 1] was founded in Chicago in 1887. Then in 1897, a second Chapter was founded on the south side of Chicago. The Grand Lodge was formed to administer joint business between the two chapters. Other chapters then were formed from all over Chicago and vicinity. In 1904, the first chapter was formed outside Chicago. In 1911, the last new chapter (Chapter 25) was formed. |

Admin/Biographical History |
Section 21 of the Luxembourg Brotherhood of America was formed on May 12, 1907 at Gross Point, IL. There were 43 charter members, with Phillip Doetsch as its first president. In 1911, the last chapter [Chapter 25] was formed of the Luxembourg Brotherhood of America and its growth stopped. The organization is still in existence [1987], but its aims now appear to be mostly social. [see also Scope for more data] Currently, they meet at Roman Rengel's house, 2700 Old Glenview Rd. He's been a member for 40 years. They've also met at Ben Schneider's on Wilmette Ave and earlier they had met at the Wilmette Golf Club. About 30 members attend each month. Mike Loutsch was a founder and one of the oldest members. |
