On March 19th 2002, a referendum regarding the purchase and development of the Mallinckrodt property was voted on. The referendum proposed that $25 million dollars be allotted to acquire the 17 acre plot and turn it into park space with a tax increase of around 2.7% (according to the CALM FAQ). The CALM organization was seeking to preserve the property due to its historical, cultural, and aesthetic significance (according to their FAQ). Had the referendum not passed, the plot of land would have been purchased by Edward R. James Partners and turned into a new subdivision of 38 luxury homes priced at around $1.2 to $1.5 million dollars (Ken Goze -- Pioneer Press Feb 28 2002, and Pioneer Press editorial -- March 28 2002). The referendum passed and so the land was turned into a public park. For more related information and newspaper articles see historical reference file. |
