Mary Martin (born in 1909), daughter of George Leggett Martin and Pearl Martin, grew up at 1046 Elmwood. She married George "Jut" Engel in 1933. They had been classmates at New Trier High School, Class of 1927. Their children were Wayne Engel, Don Engel, and Sally Engel. Mary and her husband were both commercial artists, running an advertising agency, "Martin Engel and Associates," out of their home at 423 10th Street from 1950 until Jut's death in 1975. Mary Martin Engel died on Dec. 20, 1988, at the age of 79. Behind this photo was a daguerrotype of a woman from the 1850s-1860s. The photo has a glass cover and a gold-colored preserver and frame, the frame having broken into 3 pieces. It is stored at S8-6-5, listed as K652-B. |
