Description |
Wooden potato masher from late 19th century. Cylindrical base of plain wood, rounded top, flat bottom. Handle painted black. A masher like this sold in the Sears catalog of 1897 for four cents. According to Stoneback, Kitchen Collectibles (1994) p. 22, wooden mashers like this one were sometimes called "beetles" and were also used for working dough and tenderizing meat. Lifshey (The Housewares Story, 1997) notes that "wooden potato mashers were imported from Europe by the thousands" (p. 318) |
