Description |
Fraternal ribbon for the S.S. Peter & Paul Court No. 61 of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Wilmette. The ribbon is composed of two ribbons sewn together on the top and bottom edges and attached to one enamel-like (celluloid?) metal pin with the image of two men shaking hands, situated such that the ribbon can be reversed and either side showing. The uppermost side is made of red silk ribbon printed in gold: "S.S. PETER & PAUL / COURT No. 61 / C.O.F. / WILMETTE, ILL." Attached at top of red ribbon is a narrower white ribbon woven with stylized American flags with gold flagpoles. Attached at the pointed bottom of the white ribbon is a round disk of tine and other metal depicting, in the center, a leaping stag among laurel leaves against a cross with "F H C" along the cross pieces. A fringe of gold-colored metallic bullion is attached at the bottom to both ribbons. The reverse is a piece of black silk ribbon printed in silver: "In Memoriam / [stag, laurel wreath and cross] / S.S. PETER & PAUL / COURT No. 61 . C.O.F. / WILMETTE, ILL." One ribbon is made of black silk with the following words printed on it in silver-colored ink, "In Memoriam / [image of a cross and stag inside a wreath, the Forester's emblem] / S.S. Peter & Paul / Court No. 61 / C.O.F. / Wilmette, Ill.". On the reverse side is a red silk ribbon printed in gold lettering across the bottom third of the ribbon with the words, "S.S. Peter & Paul / Court No. 61 / C.O.F. / Wilmette, Ill." Overlaid on the red ribbon is a smaller cream-colored silk ribbon embroidered with two U.S. flags with poles crossed. Attached to the bottom of this ribbon is a circular medal with the COF emblem on it (the cross, stag and green branches (laurel?) applied to a white background, probably celluloid.. The medal has a gold-colored metal rim and a silver-colored metal backing, maybe tin. Court No. 61 was organized on July 31, 1887 in what was then Gross Point, Illinois, and associated with St. Joseph Church. The fact that this badge now reads "Wilmette" instead of "Gross Point" might indicate that it is from the 1920s after the Village of Gross Point was dissolved. However, St. Joseph Church with which the local court was affiliated was always in Wilmette. This ribbon probably belonged to a member of the Schneider family, according to the donor. |
