Description |
Watercolor on paper, in white, painted wood frame with glass covering and white matt. Back of painting is covered in brown paper and has a paper label glued to back with typed information which reads, "Corrett [sic] House / Park and Central Avenues / Painted by: / Clyde Brown" and the words, "Wilmette, Ill." pencilled on same label. A small, round metal disc with the raised number "6" is attached at the top, center back. Hanging wire attached on back. House was at Park & Central, constructed of solid cedar blocks. The address when the Corettes lived here was 1300 Central. Edward Corette served as Village Trustee and president of the Board of Education. He was also active in the anti-saloon movement. His wife, Mary, was a founder of the Travel Club. The Corettes left Wilmette for Franklin, Michigan in 1914, an event noted in Wilmette Life. They sold their house to William Davidson. Brown may have selected this particular home because it had recently been demolished and replaced with townhouses. As an artist, Brown also did photography and etchings and exhibited his works at local art shows. Brown and his family lived at 1710 Walnut Avenue from about 1922 to the 1960s. He worked as a photographer for the Chicago Daily News. |
