Description |
Yellow and maroon wool felt child's beanie worn at Avoca School. The beanie is made of alternating wedges of yellow and maroon wool felt, shaped to fit on top of the head. There is a circle of yellow felt sewn at the top where the wedge shapes meet. Heat-impressed on one yellow wedge, in maroon caps: "AVOCA / SCHOOL." The beanie is unlined and machine-sewn. Written in pen along the inside facing: "Mike Carmichael." The donor, Michael Carmichael, states that his mother, Mary Edith Carmichael (Mrs. Glenn V.), taught second grade at Avoca School and became assistant principal when at the elementary building. The donor was also a student there in the 1950s, graduating in 1956. He wrote, "The class of 1955 at Avoca contained 16 kids. My class of 1956 had ballooned to 40 - many not arriving until 7th or 8th grade. I started in 3rd when there were maybe 20 of us." |
