Description |
A doorlock removed from a door at the Masonic Temple in Wilmette. Includes two doorknobs (with slight differences in shape, size, and design), two backplates (with key slots), one spindle, a mounting plate, a faceplate and a latch. Made of brass and includes a maker's mark inscribed on the mounting plate, "Barrows." The exterior doorknob is inscribed with a Masonic symbol, the "square and compass" with a "G" in the center. The exterior backplate is larger than the interior backplate. Symbolism: The square is a stonemason's tool used to confirm that two perpendicular surfaces are at a right angle with each other. It symbolizes morality and reminds Masons to "square" their actions. The compass is a stonemason's tool used to inscribe circles or arcs. It symbolizes wisdom of conduct and reminds Masons to draw a boundary around their desires and passions. The symbol "G" has multiple meanings, including "God" and "Geometry," considered the nobelest of sciences. |
