Description |
Yellowish-brown meerschaum pipe with amber-colored pipestem and fitted pipe case. .004A) Pipe. The pipe bowl is made of meerschaum and has been heavily used. The inside is coated with burned tobacco. There is an unintentional break between the bowl and the stem which has been repaired with a gold-colored fixative. One-third of the pipestem is made of meerschaum, and there is a goldtone metal ring between the meerschaum and the stem. Inscribed on the metal is a black diamond, and in caps and separate borders: "H&F / IS / G / R." The rest of the pipestem is most likely Bakelite, lucite, or Ebonite. .004B) Case. The pipe case is made of a pressed paper or cardboard, shaped to fit the pipe exactly. The case exterior is paper with a textured pattern of black freeform lines which intersect. The edges are brown paper. Goldtone metal hinge so that the case can opened fully, and small finger press for opening. Inscribed along edge, in caps: "PURE MEERSCHAUM." The case is lined with a very thin pale yellow napped cotton flannel. Affixed to the inside is a piece of white adhesive tape onto which has been written in blue pen: "Fire Chief Walter Zibble for the 50 years + / Wilmette, Ill." This pipe was a commemorative object given to Walter Zibble for his service to the Wilmette Fire Department. Mr. Zibble began as a driver for the department in 1906 and retired in 1946. Perhaps Mr. Zibble was a volunteer even before he began as a driver. |
