Two-volume, leather-bound set of Hume and Smollett's "History of England" given to John Gage by his wife Portia Gage in 1832 -- for the complete inscription, see the "Inscription" section of this record. John and Portia Gage were married in 1830 at Watertown, NY. Printed on the title page is the following: Hume and Smollett's / History of England / Abridged / and / Continued to the Accession / of / George IV / by John Robinson, D.D. / In Two Volumes / Vol. I. (or Vol. II ) / Exeter: / J. & B. Williams / 1828". The original was published in 1823. There is an engraving frontispiece in each volume; in Vol. I, titled, "Invasion of Julius Caesar" and in Vol. II, "Death of Wolf." Volume I (Part A) is 276 pages and Volume II (Part B) is 255 pages with an appendix. Printed in gold on each spine are the words, "History of England / Vol. I (Vol II on the second volume)". This set was authored by Rev. John Robinson, an abridged version of David Hume's "History of England" and Tobias Smollett's " A Complete History of England." |
