Description |
Three-dimensional wood carving of seven circus performers gathered around an open fire with a pot over the fire. From the left side of the carving are: a child kneeling, clothed in a loosely fitting garment; an older woman wearing a hooded and fringed cape, reaching out to the pot with a large spoon; a standing young woman dressed in a dress with a decorated bodice and pleated skirt; a mustached man, also standing, wearing a fez-like hat, a decorated tunic, and a thigh-length jacket; a standing person in a clown's outfit and cone-shaped hat; a man seated on a drum, his elbows resting on his knees and hands resting on his face, also wearing a clownlike outfit; and a child eating an apple (?) standing on the far right, with a monkey crouching on a cabinet in the background. The carving is enclosed in a substantial frame, a black wood box on back and a light brown wood frame around the opening. Carved by Christian Carsten (1863-1956) of 2635 Kenilworth Avenue, Wilmette. Donor thinks two central figures might have been modelled on Carsten and his wife. [Correspondence between museum and donor re: this carving is attached to catalog worksheet in folder. Includes statement by donor about provenance.] See also the Wilmette Life article about Carsten in the issue for March 21, 1935, page 20. |
