Description |
Cowhide belt with a metal buckle depicting the five bugles of the Fire Chief. The belt is unfinished natural brown cowhide on the reverse. The outside is dyed a glossy black. One end is finished with a riveted metal hook, the other end is fitted with a silvertone metal buckle. The buckle is rectangular and plain except for a center medallion with a fluted edge and a stippled background. In the foreground are five crossed bugles. A rim of glossier metal surrounds the medallion but is mostly worn away. The cowhide is doubled behind the buckle and is riveted to the belt. The buckle is affixed to the belt with two prongs visible on the reverse. The hook affixes to a metal bar near the prongs. Stamped in black on the inside: "HANDLE COWHIDE [ILLEG.] GRAIN." This belt was worn by Fred Behrendt, Fire Chief of Wilmette, from 1958 until 1976. |
