Description |
Red and off-white wool flag or banner with a blue star, indicating that a U.S. serviceman was off fighting in WWII. The service banner is a rectangle made in three colors of wool. The border is red and is finished on three sides by machine overcasting. There is a pocket at the top through which a dowel has been inserted. Gold painted finials on either end. A goldish-yellow cotton cord with tassels is tied to either end of the dowel for hanging in a window. Inside is a rectangle of off-white wool with an unfinished, blue star glued to the center. The seams between the red and the white wool are faggotted. A banner such as this signified that one member of the family was serving in the armed forces (stars were added for each family member serving). A gold star signified a man killed in action or who died from other causes while in service. |
